The “Canvas Plan” is the first and most crucial stage in the design process. It establishes the general mood for the space, and defines the specific color palette, finishes, and textures that will be used throughout.

A good Canvas Plan is essential to good design. It’s what makes everything in a space feel cohesive and related — not overly matched, but harmonious, like a well-written music compassion that knows when to fill the space, just what to fill it with, and when to leave it more open. You don’t have to be a composer to be moved by a beautiful piece of music. The same is true with design. You might not know why a room feels so good to you, but if it’s well-designed, you can feel it.

PROCESS

• The first step in The Canvas Plan is the interview stage, in which I ask you lots of questions to help you tell me what you you want your space to look and feel like, or what qualities and priorities you want your space to reflect back to you.

• In the second step, I take that information and present to you a schematic of colors, textures, materials and even eras and cultures to draw from and adhere to as we (or you) later proceed to fill the space. We’ll go back and forth with one another until the schematic feels just right to you.

• In the third step, we apply the design scheme to all architectural and fixed elements in the interior. This includes walls, floors, doors, trim, electrical hardware, and installed lighting fixtures.

Once you have a Canvas Plan, you’re well set up to proceed with a beautifully cohesive interior. And you can proceed on your own, or we can continue to serve you. It’s entirely up to you. But creating a design foundation with a Canvas Plan is always a wise investment.
